The Women Run 10K event – themed “Women of Victory” and organised by the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) in collaboration with Sovannaphum Life Assurance – successfully concluded on March 8, 2024 amid great excitement.
Held on International Women’s Day, which celebrates the achievements of women, this year saw a remarkable surge in participation, with some 3,000 registered runners gathered in front of Phnom Penh’s Botumvatey Pagoda Park for the start.
The event was presided over by H.E. Dr. Thong Khon, Senior Minister and President of the NOCC, and Lok Chumteav Koy Pisey, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Tourism and head of the women and sport commission.
H.E. Vath Chamroeun, NOCC secretary-general, H.E Nhem Morokat, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and President of the Cambodian DanceSport Federation, and Loke Kah Meng, the CEO of Sovannaphum Life, also oversaw proceedings.
H.E. Dr. Thong Khon said that with the NOCC collaborating with Sovannaphum Life to organise the Women Run 10K in celebration of the 113th International Women’s Day, it was hugely gratifying to see more than 3,000 runners participating, with everyone receiving a commemorative medal.
He hailed the successful completion of the event and the new experience the 10km runners enjoyed this year, as they ran through Koh Pich over the newly opened Koh Norea Bridge.
Lok Chumteav Koy Pisey highlighted the participation of runners both old and young in the Women Run 10K this year, proving Cambodian people are more than ever focusing on sports, and highlighting the growing awareness of the importance of being physically active.
CEO of Sovannaphum Life Loke Kah Meng said the company was immensely proud of cooperating with the NOCC to make the event a huge success, and to see the large number of families registering for the run to have fun and enjoy quality time together.
Some companies had also registered employees as a team bonding event and to support a charitable cause, he added.
Sovannaphum Life, he said, is offering free “SMILE Life Solutions” insurance products for the six women winners and contributing 4,000 riel for each runner registered to fund its corporate social responsibility activities through the Cambodia Women Entrepreneurs Association (CWEA).
Sovannaphum Life is working with CWEA on a sustainable approach towards the contributed funds from the Women Run 10K to support its social activities.
The majority of the in-kind will go mainly to CWEA to support training activities in entrepreneur leadership, financial planning and management, social media marketing, and other programmes in alignment with the donor.
In addition, a special trainer is on hand to support training in the financial sector. The objective of this campaign is to engage and support young women entrepreneurs to help grow their micro businesses and enhance their living standards.
